The interviews went very well and I landed a (tech) job offer that I accepted. However, I have a poor credit score due to a bankruptcy declared two years ago. What should I do when I will be asked to sign for credit check and for a company credit card (amex who certainly will refuse) on the first day? Could the company rescind the offer? What should I do now that I already resigned from my previous employer?
It used to be unlikely for companies to check your credit report, but it’s becoming more and more common. According to an article in the LA Times called "Trapped: It’s hard to get a job if your credit is bad" (see sources for the link), the proportion of employers running credit checks has increased by 55% in the last 5 years, and is now equal to 33% of all employers.
Credit checks are most common for jobs that imply working with money or valuables, such as for bank tellers or jewelery shop assistants. In principle a tech job doesn’t seem so likely to require a credit check, but if they’re going to offer you a company credit card then they may run it anyway.
One possibility is that you explain to them the reasons why you have bad credit. Companies associate bad credit with lack of trustworthiness on the part of the potential employee, but if you show to them that you have bad credit due to health problems, divorce, or similarly unpredictable circumstances, they may not take it into account.
Checking credit reports is not legal for employers in all states. You may check if it’s legal in your state, and if not you may refuse to give them permission to do it.
Otherwise, you just have to wait and see. They may not check your credit report or may not consider it enough to withdraw the offer.
Good luck!

I have improved credit after filing bankruptcy about 5 years ago . I was able to secure auto loan and capital one card , but I find I am desperate for small loan of about 1,500 and most payday loan places offer a max of 800.00 in our area. I am also very scared of all the online fast loans due to scamming for information .Any ideas?
If you have good payment history with your vehicle, talk to the bank where you have the loan. They may give you the loan, and if the vehicle is nearly or all paid off, that could be used as collateral for the loan.
can you please give me websites and links thank you. Plus its better if the credit card is guaranteed approval because i have no credit score right now. I am new to the credit system. And please don’t give me orchard bank and First Premier Bank because i already got denied by those companies. And keep in mind that i live in New York so some cards like Centennial aren’t accepted here.
There is no such thing as guaranteed approval. If you don’t have any credit history, you will have problems getting approved for a legit unsecured credit card. Instead of looking for something online, go to your bank. You already have a relationship with them and have a better chance of getting approved.
You may have to go with a secured card — you pay a deposit which is held as collateral against the line of credit. Use the card and pay in full every month. In about a year, you should be able to convert the card to a regular account.

What credit card comapny would approve me me for a credit card for poor credit? Thanks
Orchard Bank, which is a division of Mastercard, is good for people with no credit or bad credit. You can also try a department store credit card, they’re easy to get and have low spending limits, as long you can pay for purchases that month ( buy a 20 item on the card and then pay the balance) That is a really good way to build credit.
I bought a map online and during the order process it stated that I would be charged "the price of international shipping plus $14 for International packaging, documentation and guaranteed delivery".
At the end of the order form it had the following:
Product $5.60
Shipping $14.00
Total $19.60
They charged $19.60 to my card and later another $5.20 for "shipping". The way the totals were presented, I interpreted that the total was $19.60 and that shipping had already been added in. The order receipt they sent only stated the $19.60 without mentioning extra charges would be added, and they didn’t even email me to tell me they had charged extra to my card – I only found out when I checked my statement.
I thought if someone was going to charge you more than you had actually authorized, they had to get your approval first.
Can I do anything to get the extra charge reversed?
I already contacted the company for a refund – that’s how I know what the charges were for. They said that because the description earlier in the form was for "the price of international shipping plus $14 for International packaging, documentation and guaranteed delivery". In their opinion, this allows them to charge a non-specified amount for postage.
So that’s my question – is this allowed?
There’s no point contacting the credit card company unless this is not allowed (it’s not fraud).
JC: I don’t like your response, but I appreciate you reading the details. The wording is exactly what the company is relying on.
So what I am trying to find out is:
(a) Is it legal for them to charge the extra amount without getting authorization for it as well?
(One of their competitors uses a similar process but gets the customer to confirm the postage charges before shipping – guess who I will be ordering with from now on!)
(b) Is there something else I can rely on, such as "misleading and deceptive conduct" (which would be an option in Australia)?
The way the form was worded with an item for "Shipping" rather than "International Handling" – and the absence of any mention on the form or receipt of additional charges – gave the impression the amount was the total. The item was a map, ie very light, so it did not seem unreasonable that the costs would be included in the $14 already added.
Contact your credit card issuer and dispute the charge immediately. You should always contact them immediately with any questions or concerns about your account.
